What is Requirements Interchange Format (ReqIF)

ReqIF (Requirements Interchange Format) is a standardized XML-based metamodel designed for seamless requirements exchange between different requirements engineering tools. It captures requirements, metadata, and embedded files in a structured XML format, ensuring interoperability.

Instead of the .xml extension, ReqIF files use .reqif, while zipped files containing embedded objects use .reqiz. Originally developed by the German automotive industry under the RIF standard in 2004, ReqIF emerged as its successor when the OMG published version 1.0.1 in 2011, followed by version 1.2 in 2016. Today, ReqIF extends beyond automotive, supporting diverse industries.
